You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do."

Ronald J. Frederick, Ph.D., L.P.

A psychologist, author, trainer and consultant, Dr. Ron Frederick is co-founder of the Center for Courageous Living in Minneapolis and author of the forthcoming book Living Like You Mean It (Jossey-Bass, 2009). He is also a Senior Faculty Member of the Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy Institute as well as the supervising psychologist of Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Park House Day Treatment Program.

A long-time proponent of the power of therapy to transform lives, he has been providing innovative, experiential therapy to individuals and couples for over fifteen years.

Dr. Frederick travels throughout North America as a speaker and trainer, receiving consistent acclaim for his expertise and inviting teaching style. His work has been featured in The Star Tribune, Lavender Magazine, the APA Monitor on Psychology, and Clinical Psychiatry News: The Leading Independent Newspaper for the Psychiatrist and he's been quoted on CNN.com.

Dr. Frederick has written articles for several professional publications and was an invited contributor to three books by Haworth Press, Inc. that teach therapists how to help people in challenging situations to live more fully (Gay Men Living with Chronic Illnesses: From Crisis to Crossroads, 2004; AIDS and Mental Health Practice, 1999; The HIV-Negative Gay Man: Developing Strategies for Survival and Emotional Well-Being, 1998)

Background:

Through his own personal experience, Ron quickly realized the limitations of traditional therapy and set out on a quest to discover methods that would allow people to realize their full potential and achieve true healing. “I sought help from a therapist in my twenties, during a difficult time in my life” explains Ron. “On one hand, it was rather eye-opening for me as it was the first time I really stopped to consider how my early experiences in life had been impacting me. But the trouble was, although I gained a lot of insight, it didn’t really help me change.” Deep down Ron knew there must be a way to go further.

Moving Beyond "Talk Therapy":

While on internship in 1994 at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC, Ron discovered a group of therapists whose work transcended “talk therapy” and instead focused on facilitating here-and-now emotional experiences that were truly transforming for their clients. “I had never seen anything like it and I was both deeply moved and astounded by the results,” he recalls with excitement. “I thought to myself, ‘This is what good therapy can be!’”

Ron knew he had found his professional home. Following a year-long training rotation in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) at Beth Israel Medical Center, he sought training and supervision from acclaimed psychologist, Dr. Diana Fosha, the developer of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and author of The Transforming Power of Affect.

Since then Dr. Frederick has been practicing and teaching cutting-edge therapeutic approaches that utilize new emotional experiences to resolve problems and remove blocks that hinder growth. In 2004 he accepted an invitation to serve as a senior faculty member of the AEDP Institute. In keeping with his desire to help people truly transform, Dr. Frederick is also a certified EMDR therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing).

Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Frederick now lives in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Ron Frederick can be reached via e-mail at: DrRon@cfcliving.com, or by phone at: 612-926-8149. For further contact information click here.
